Graduate Education, Counseling, & Leadership Students

Graduate programs in Education, Counseling, and Leadership are designed for hands-on learning, real world situational analysis, and an understanding of the world in which today’s leaders must function. Each program has unique requirements and deadlines that are listed below.

Steps to Apply

  1. Complete the application for graduate study online or fill out a paper application.

  2. Submit a $50 non-refundable application fee. If you are applying online, you may pay via credit card. All checks should be made out to Rider University and should include the student’s name and phone number.

  3. Submit official transcripts from every college or university attended.

  4. Statement of aims and objectives (minimum one page)

  5. Copy of your current resume

  6. Submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores, if English is not your native language, and you did not attend a U.S. university for a previous undergraduate or graduate degree program.

    Minimum TOEFL score:
    550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), 80 (iBT)

Entrance Requirements

Graduate Level Teacher Certification Program

  • 2.75 cumulative GPA

  • 2 letters of recommendation
  • Official notification of passing Praxis test score(s). Required test(s) is dependent upon the type of certification the applicant is seeking. See the GLTP handbook for more information and go to to find test dates/locations and register for the exam(s).
Note: Program is not available to F-1 student visa holders; other visa holders should contact the NJ State Department of Teacher Licensure directly to ensure that they would be eligible for student teaching and state certification.

M.A. Counseling Services (School) and
M.A. Clinical Mental Health Counseling

  • 2 professional letters of recommendation
  • Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test score results
  • Participation in a group interview session facilitated by faculty, including an on-site writing sample

M.A. Teacher Leadership

Determinging who should be considered for the M.A. in Teacher Leadership Program is a selective process.  Students must submit the following documents to be considered: 

  • Official transcripts from every college and univeristy attended with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Copies of teaching evaluations for the most recent two years
  • Letters of recommendation from a supervisor, a principal, and a colleague
  • Professional resume
  • A minimum two-page reflection on the following prompt:
    • What are the knowledge, skills, and qualities that will enable you to become an effective teacher leader in your school?

M.A. Organizational Leadership

  • 2 letters of recommendation
  • Participation in an interview with a program coordinator

M.A. Special Education

  • 2 professional letters of recommendation (at least one from a current district or school administrator)
  • Participation in an interview with a program coordinator

M.A. Teaching

  • 2 letters of recommendation (at least one letter of recommendation from a district or school administrator, or an immediate supervisor or team leader)
  • Participation in an interview with a program coordinator

Education Specialist (ED.S.) Counseling

  • Applicants must possess a Master's degree in Counseling from a CACREP accredited school. If you do not meet this criteria, please apply to the MA in Counseling program.
  • 2 current professional reference
  • Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test or score results
  • Group or individual interview
Note: Applicant must possess one year (or its equivalent) of counseling experience.

Education Specialist (ED.S.) School Psychology

  • 2 current professional references
  • Submission of GRE with a minimum GRE Verbal and Quantitative of 144, respectively
  • Group or individual interview
